The Hawaiian Lifeguard Association is a professional association incorporated in the State of Hawai`i that has United States Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.

The association was organized in 1990 as an offshoot of the former Hawai`i Lifesaving Association, a local chapter of the United States Lifesaving Association. The re-organization was performed as a matter of refocusing the association to deal with specific and germane educational issues related to providing lifeguarding and ocean safety services in Hawaii's very unique culture, environment and milieu.

The Association, as established and revitalized, seeks,

• To establish and maintain high standards of professional surf and open water lifesaving to maximize the public's safety in Hawaiian ocean waters.
• To provide public, professional and governmental education in the field of ocean water safety, particularly in the areas of rescue management, emergency medical care and treatment, and the conduct of informational activities designed to prevent aquatic emergencies in Hawaiian waters.
• To actively support the general improvement of lifesaving and humanitarian causes.

HERE ARE SOME BASIC OCEAN SAFETY TIPS:

• Swim in Lifeguarded Areas
• Never Swim Alone
• Don't Dive Into Unknown Water or Into Shallow Breaking Waves
• Ask a Lifeguard About Beach and Surf Conditions Before Swimming
• If You Are Unable to Swim Out of a Strong Current, Signal for Help
• Rely on Your Swimming Ability Rather Than a Flotation Device
• Look For, Read and Obey All Beach Safety Signs and Symbols
• If In Doubt, Just Stay Out!
