THE HOLLY AND THE IVY

The Holly and the Ivy and the poinsettia have been the foliage of winter that we have come to identify with Yule. Here in the tropics is a December profusion of red poinsettia and a paucity of yellow plumeria. The red winter flowers of Hawaii complement the dark green of the Norfolk pine. Thus, the Christmas colors are independent of latitude even as they are dependent on season. But this is foliage evocative of Christmas past; the upperclass trickle down world of the Christmas Carol, the mercantile New England world of Hiram Bingham, the Royal Hawaiian world of Queen Liliuokalani.

a world of uncommon heritage
There is a new world today, a world that vaguely perceives a common heritage but relegates it to the barren wasteland of the deep seabed or condemns it to struggle with the ethnic strife that overpopulation breeds, or else to migrate over land and sea; sans income, sans food stamps, sans universal public health. But here we unveil a new gift - Agriculture based on the cold from the deep waters of the sea. Here in Hawaii, the cold from deep ocean water is used to make micro-climates of spring and summer and fall such that the plants of every season can flourish organically and fruitfully. Behold the Christmas red of spring strawberries, the dark velvet green of fall foliage and the red and green of summer watermelon. This is 'Christmas Present' at our experimental garden. This will bc 'Christmas Future' when the coastal desert will bloom throughout the year with vegetables, herbs and flowers from every clime and every season. Before that day appears the affluent world in which we live must come with the gift of a pipe and a pump and a pond for every community with deep sea access. Won't you join with CHC and make this dream come true?
