It was nearly impossible for me to believe that golf grass was not only growing, but thriving on barren ground-up lava rocks! Then I saw what you see in the picture here. If you look at the picture closely, you will find that a little grass tendril is headed straight for the pipe. This pipe is filled with deep cold ocean water and as this pipe condenses due to the intense heat of the coastal desert, it makes the soil wet and very cool. We did add some fish compost to serve as a source of food and nutrients for the growing grass, but no soil has been added. WHat it extremely incredible is that this grass has grown on only crushed rocks and fish compost. However, without the condensate produced by the cold water pipes, this mixture is merely dust and rocks.
This has a tremendous impact on the world. Cold water agriculture works- and the impact this statement carries will be far reaching. You are looking at a way to change barren coastal deserts with low productivity and very few resources to a place where you can grow ample food for everyone in the community and change the landscape (if the people so choose) to a green and lush area with lots of productivity. And if they want a decent lawn or even a golf course for tourists, they can! This gives the people of the community the opportunity to be almost entirely self-sufficient and no longer dependent on other nations for food or dollars.
