AND A BODY WITH LIFE
AND LIBERTY

As
evolutionary creatures from the sea, the common heritage of
humanity is a body that is capable of descending to any depth in
the ocean poroviding compensation is made for the gas breathing
systems that evolved to permit an earthly life. Thus we are capable
of skindiving to depths as great as one hundred feet. Captain
George Bond made a successful free ascent from a submarine at a
depth of 363 feet. SCUBA divers breathing air can descend to 200
feet. 'Saturated divers' breathing Heliox (Helium Oxygen) mixtures
can operate at 600 feet or more. Divers breathing Hydrox (Hydrogen
and Oxygen can descend to more than 1000 feet and French divers
breathing a mixture of Nitrogen Oxygen and Hydrogen have been
successful at nearly 3000 feet. This is a depth greater than that
of most submarines. In principle a human whose lung is flooded with
a saline solution which has the same salinity as blood (Ringers
solution) could descend to more than 3000 feet and range throughout
the water column without fear of bends or embolism. The divers
shown here are students at the University of Hawaii and some are
founding members of the Internatinal Institute for the Advancement
of Humans as Marine
Mammals
