THE FOURTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS
NATURE GAVE TO ME
FOUR SEASONS BRIGHT

THREE FAMILY

TWO FRONTAL LOBES
and a body with life and liberty

Even on the equator, nature has provided humanity with four seasons. Most pronounced in the North and South temperate zones, there are none-the less subtle but significant differences associated with the seasons in tropical and arctic regions. The seasons provide a model for humanity of creation, life, death and resurrection. The rites of spring, primitive and honest as depicted by Stravinsky or civilized and hypocritical as depicted by the Easter bunny, produce a surge in birth nine months later as humanity gets the message from nature that it is time to procreate. The medieval artist who depicts the changing seasons does not fail to include the female of the species arrayed in adornments which attract the male. Summer reminds us of the need to toil through the summer of life in preparation for life's winter. Autumn is the time for harvest and preservation. The acorns being harvested in the artists depiction will soon appear as smoked ham for winterfest. It also recalls Shakespeare's observation "that time of year thou may in me behold when yellow leaves, or few or none, do hang upon those boughs that shake against the cold - bare ruined choirs where late the sweet birds sang."

Then comes winterfest where confined to quarters humanity consumes with gusto the product of the preceding year. Why so? Nature has taught us " Oh wind, if winter come, can spring be far behind?"
