From antiquity it was presumed that the "fruits de mer" were a gift from the sea in inexhaustible supply. But now we have passed the maximum sustainable yield on a world basis and demand will climb as the population expands and moves toward the coastal zone.

Marine protein is the only food of humanity that is still hunted from the wild

Attempts at aquaculture employing surface waters have proven expensive and have suffered from disease and competitor organisms. But here in Hawaii at Ke-ahole point disease free marine animals are grown in absolutely pure deep ocean water. Salmon, lobster, flounder, abalone, oyster and a great many other marine creatures have been produced plentifully and economically at the site. 100 acres of lobsters will yield the entire annual crop of Maine lobsters harvested from the wild. The supply is not inexhaustible but it can be xpanded to meet the needs of the growing population for decades in the hope that a solution to the population expansion is on the way.
