SALINAS IS NOT ON THE COAST

ARTICHOKES ANYONE ?

Artichokes have deep roots. They take a long time to grow. They need a dry climate with lots of irrigation water. They did not seem to be a good candidate for coldwater agriculture on a dry coastal desert. But Carolyn Ho likes artichokes. So she planted some. The pipes weren't deep enough (theoretically) and there wasn't enough space in the garden. But the artichokes didn't seem to understand and they grew big, fast, beautiful and tasty. Just look at them and taste them in your mind.
Well, we aren't going to plant many more. When Salinas is in season they are pretty cheap and plentiful but we may plant a couple out of season just for the fun of eating them in December when they are only a memory to everybody else. We recommend a steady diet of potatoes instead.
