THE ACADEMIC FAMILIES

The nuclear family has had more than fifty years of involvement with one or more academic families as student or faculty alumni. Our most intertwined involvement haw been with the University of Iowa from which Institution John and Dorothy and son David have degrees from 1948 to 1981. The 'Old Man of the Sea is an alumnus of Brooklyn College, Cornell (far above Cayuga's waters) California Institute of Technology (the 'whiz kid" factory) the University of Iowa (that's where the tall corn grows) and George Washington University Law School. He has taught at the Walter Hervey Junior College (bet you never heard of that) and has held all of the academic titles at the University of Hawaii from the lowly title of Dean to the honorary and exalted title of 'uncompensated appointee'. Dorothy is a graduate of SouthEast Missouri State University and was associated with the Universiy of Iowa as student and then Speech Clinic supervisor until 1951. Since then she has been sequentially Professor of Speech and Hearing at the University of Maryland and the University of Hawaii. She is now retired but is on the staff at Walter Reed Hospial and continues to teach a course or two at the Universiy. Sarah Craven (daughter) is a graduate of HanaHaouli elementary school Punahou (these institutions are Universities for Children in the sense that they have alumni organizations that maintain the bonds of the academic family for a lifetime) Macalester College, Cambridge University and the Georgetown School of Law. vid Craven is alos a graduate of Punahou as well as the University of Iowa and the George Washington School of Law. Music and Law are sequentially his love and his profession. None of us are active in any alumni organization but all of us are forever in touch with those with whom we have and have had a marriage of minds.Today (January 30) we received a communication from Doug and Alaine Baines. oug and John were students together and he was the best man at our wedding. They have had four children and now numerous grand children. Through the miracle of email they send pictures of their families.
