THE LEARNING CENTER

The Learning Center is an extension program of Hoa `Aina and the Na Keiki O Ka `Aina (Children of the Land). Through its hands-on farm tours, the Learning Center emphasizes respect for the land, the inter-relationship between humans and their environment, as well as caring for the earth and each other.
Four 2-3 hour curriculums have been developed:
  • Hawaiian plants and the environment
  • Animals (including mammals, fish, birds, bees, and reptiles)
  • Home Gardening
  • Alternative Energy.

A general tour of the farm, with a focus on food production and life cycles, is also available. Over the course of the half-day tours, students have opportunities to plant or harvest vegetables, taste honey fresh from the hive, see the gills of a fish, and learn some of the traditional uses of Hawai`i's native plants. In the process, these concrete experiences reinforce and illuminate the concepts already being taught in their science, health, and Hawaiiana classrooms.

Twenty five schools (representing 2090 students) are already visiting the Learning Center during the current academic year. Coming predominately from the housing projects and condominiums of urban Honolulu, the visit to the farm is often the students' introduction to the Wai`anae Coast as well as the first time they come face to face with geese, beehives, a sheep or taro.

The Learning Center is also committed to enhancing the learning of the students on the Wai`anae Coast. Presenting our more rural lifestyle in an educational setting can be a valuable and affirming experience for our students. By focusing on concrete activities, the Learning Center's approach to pedagogy is particularly appropriate for the cultures of our community. Our experience has shown that this hands-on method of learning can help transform educational material, that can sometimes seem alien or intimidating, into something that is accessible and interesting to our students.

The Learning Center can accommodate groups of up to 60 students at any one time. In order to defray expenses and maximize the number of students we are able to serve, a donation of $1.00 for each student and adult visiting the farm is requested.
